With the last bucket of concrete poured onto the roof of the wafer fab building at the topping-out ceremony on June 18, YASC Wuhan Base featuring an annual capacity of 360,000 silicon carbide (SiC) wafers reached the pivotal moment of topping out its main structure!
YASC Wuhan Base, the first project in Wuhan New Town, mainly focuses on the third-generation semiconductor power device research, development and production, and is committed to building a modern semiconductor manufacturing base integrated with chip design, manufacturing and advanced technology R&D. The project boasts a total investment of over CNY20 billion, a floor area of approximately 229,400 m2 and a construction area of approximately 301,500 m2. The main construction content includes a wafer fab building, an assembly building, an epitaxial wafer building, a power building, a finished product warehouse, an office complex, a staff dormitory and production supporting housing facilities.
Wuhan Base has finally completed the topping out of the main structure after nearly 300 days of working around the clock in accordance with the three principles of “safety first, quality first, speed first”, since its official launch on September 1, 2023. Next, the project will enter the new stage for the interior decoration of the tower and main structure construction of the podium building, and is expected to power-on for mass production in July next year. After the project goes into production, the base can produce 360,000 SiC bare and epitaxy wafers and 61 million power device modules a year, which are widely used in new energy vehicles (NEVs), photovoltaics (PV), energy storage and charging stations.
Wuhan Base is a crucial part of YASC’s development strategy. The successful topping out marks that the layout of YASC’s three bases — Wuhu Base, Shanghai Technology Center and Wuhan base — has initially taken shape. Not only that, for the industry, after the completion of the project, the base will also attract and drive more upstream and downstream enterprises in the compound semiconductor industrial chain to gather, exchange and collaborate, and thus help build a more improved SiC industry ecosystem at a faster pace.
After its official launch on September 1, 2023, the Wuhan Base project has delivered anticipated outcomes characterized by “zero incident in safety, accelerated construction” with the full support of all the parties involved, and nowadays entered the key stage of quality management, Zhuang Dan, Executive Director and President of YOFC and Chairman of YASC, said when delivering remarks. He hopes all the staff go all out in the project construction in high spirits to ensure that Wuhan Base is put into production at an early date, and lay a robust foundation for the goal of becoming a fully intelligent world-class benchmark SiC device manufacturing factory.
